SMCP XXXIV- Ship Dimensions & Mooring Lines

In this unit, students will learn the essential maritime vocabulary used to describe ship dimensions, position, and mooring arrangements during berthing and unberthing operations. The lesson connects basic ship dimensions with practical seamanship, helping students understand how the vessel's length, beam, draft, bow, stern, forward and aft sections relate to the way the ship is positioned alongside a berth. Students will then learn the main mooring lines and leads used to secure a vessel, including the head line, breast line, forward spring, stern line, aft spring, centre/Panama lead and buoy line. The focus is not only on memorizing terminology, but on understanding what each line does, which direction it leads, what movement it controls, and how all the lines work together as one mooring system. The unit also introduces practical IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases used during berthing operations, such as instructions to send out, heave, slack away, hold on and make fast mooring lines.
