UNIT 47 – SMCP: CARGO & DANGEROUS GOODS

This unit covers the standard phrases used for cargo checks and for handling dangerous goods with the IMO-IMDG Code. It follows the IMO SMCP phrases for On-board Communications in three areas:

• Cargo checks — containers, stowpieces, rope clips, heavy lifts and lashings.
• Dangerous goods — IMO-Class, flammable and poisonous goods, gases in contact with water, spontaneous heating and combustion, and the IMDG Code.
• Stowage and safe handling — where to stow, segregation, tarpaulins, stowage away from the engine room bulkhead or foodstuffs, briefing stevedores, refusing damaged packings, ventilation and no smoking.
